Brazil’s hard-right government has this afternoon declared it will knock back an aid package from G7 countries with money and resources to help extinguish the fires consuming the Amazon.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro questioned the motives of G7 leaders, accusing them of a colonialist mindset and of coveting the vast natural resources that lie beneath the Amazon basin.

But given that the leaders of the world’s wealthiest nations could only come up with a modest $32 million to put towards the crisis, what hope is there for one of the world’s most important eco-systems?
