Research Assistant
Jeppe van der Lee is a researcher in urban wildfire risk whose work focuses on the spatial drivers of house loss in fire‑prone landscapes.
He conducted his Master of Research at the University of Tasmania, where he reconstructed the 1967 Hobart fires, using historical aerial photography, vegetation mapping, and statistical modelling. His thesis quantified how distance to forest and garden fuels shaped patterns of house destruction across Greater Hobart.
Jeppe now works with the Fire Centre as a casual research assistant, extending this research by identifying additional house destruction, to refine the original dataset. This work contributes to a more complete understanding of historical fire impacts and supports ongoing efforts to improve contemporary bushfire‑risk reduction and fuel management at the wildland-urban interface.
