NSW Bushfire and Natural Hazards Research Centre

Over the last decade, eastern Australia has seen unprecedented drought, heatwave, bushfire and flooding events that have caused record damage and have been extremely testing for individuals, communities, and all layers of government. Current approaches to emergency management are rooted in the PPRR paradigm (prevention, preparedness, response and recovery), and fail to systematically anticipate and assess threats and risks.

The NSW Bushfire and Natural Hazards Research Centre aims to deliver and manage a world-leading, cross-disciplinary bushfire and natural hazards research centre that drives innovation and exchange of knowledge, technology and skills between research partners and state government. Driven by end-user needs and specifically addressing NSW Bushfire and Flood inquiry recommendations, the research centre will address key knowledge and technology gaps, deliver data products, tools, training and commercialisation opportunities to support forecasting, planning, and informed decision-making for management and policy development.
