Phd Candidate
Liu Zhao is a PhD student at the University of Tasmania with the Fire Centre and the NSW Bushfire and Natural Hazards Research Centre, focusing on monitoring and mapping post-fire vegetation structural changes and recovery. He is dedicated to developing robust methods for pre- and post-fire vegetation structure mapping and to building a long-term time-series database of post-fire recovery in NSW, with the aim of identifying the drivers of vegetation recovery following the Black Summer fires and producing vegetation resilience maps for NSW. He holds degrees in Environmental Management and Spatial Sciences from Xi’an University of Science and Technology (BSc, 2020) and the University of Tasmania (MSc, 2024).
Liu worked as a GIS analyst at Esri China and a satellite industry company (2020 -2022), with experience in GIS software and web development, database management, remote sensing data processing, and deep learning applications. Since early 2024, he has also worked as a Casual Research Associate at UTAS, contributing to the development of a historical imagery database for Tasmania and conducting cutting-edge ecological research using LiDAR. He is dedicated to combining research and technical skills to address climate change challenges, particularly in understanding and enhancing post-fire vegetation resilience.
