Anna Gjedrem

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Social Resilience and Adaptation to Wildland Fire.

Biography

Anna Marie Gjedrem is from a small town in Norway, she grew up on a farm. Currently a postdoctoral research fellow in wildfire management and social resilience at UTAS, Tasmania, Australia. She undertook a PhD at HVL, Haugesund, Norway and the European University of Cyprus, CERIDES. Conducting interdisciplinary research to understand which parameters can lead to disastrous Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) fires and how to reduce this risk in coastal Norwegian heathlands. In Norway, Anna was involved in participatory and action research in collaboration with local civic groups. In collaboration with several other stakeholders, she investigated practical innovations for WUI fire prevention, such as NoFence a virtual fencing system, and approaches, techniques, and tools for landscape management. She has investigated previous major WUI fires on the West Coast of Norway. Drawing lessons learned from these incidents to inform future preventive measures. She has also personally participated in several prescribed burning operations and facilitated a drone community at the Haugesund campus. Currently, she is collaborating with HVL Media Lab to create a documentary on wildfires in Norway.

urrently, Anna is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Tasmania’s Fire Centre, working closely with Dr. Stefania Ondei and Prof. David Bowman. My research navigates social resilience and community adaptation to wildland fires, sponsored by Natural Hazards Research Australia. I am part of the NHMRC Australia-wide Healthy Environments and Lives (HEAL) Network, exploring bushfire-induced environmental and health issues.
